Description

The Dracaena Mahatma also known as corn plant is a houseplant that was popular with European families, then made its way to the United States. Locals embraced the plants so much it ended up becoming somewhat of a staple in their homes. Corn plants have been popular houseplants because they do well indoors and have a unique appearance that almost looks like artificial plastic palm trees. People use them as living wall art in their homes, creating beautiful scenes with several on display at once. These plants are referred as good house plants because they look tall and narrow, while being cleaned and satiated very easily by inexperienced indoor gardeners.

Essential Requirements to Keep Plant Healthy

Sunlight

-At least 3-6 hours of preferably morning sunlight a day is ideal for plant to grow well and natural direct bright light for the rest of the day.

Watering

-Water only when the soil feels dry to touch. This plant does not like fluoride and may suffer discoloration if the tap water contains a large amount of fluoride (around 0.7 percent). Use distilled or non-fluoridated water at all times & the soil never be allowed to dry out completely.

Soil

-The soil should be well drained and fertile, rich in organic content for growing plant.

Fertilizer

-Apply organic fertilisers during spring months and rainy seasons. Loosen the soil but don’t damage the roots to allow nutrients and water to be better taken up by the plant.

Tree Care

It can be propagated from tip cuttings taken with 3 or 4 leaves attached. You will need to put the tip cuttings in 8cm (3 inch) pots filled with a moistened rooting mixture consisting of equal parts peat and sand. Pack them neatly into a plastic bag and keep them in a temperature of 21-24 degrees C in partially shaded positions. Alternatively, could you place the bags inside a heated propagator case? Unlikely that they will require additional water for four to six weeks. After rooting has occurred, remove the pot for plastic bag or propagator and begin to water the new plant moderately, moistening the potting mixture at each watering and allowing the top centimetre (0.4 inches) or so of the mixture to dry out before watering again. When roots appear on the surface of the mixture, move your plant into a slightly larger pot with standard potting mixture used for adult plants and treat it as you would an adult plant.
